Authentic Movement is a contemplative practice in which a mover closes her eyes and waits for an inner impulse to move or be still.
Moving freely while following sensations, thoughts, images, and ideas provides a bridge to the unconscious, and through movement, the unknown becomes known.
During the period of movement, a non-judgmental witness holds space, tracks her own responses to what she sees, and provides a silent, attentive presence to the mover.
Following movement, there is a period of time during which the mover may use creative art making to crystallize her discoveries. Dialogue is also an option, with the mover having the opportunity to speak and receive feedback if desired.
While training in the practice of Dance/Movement Therapy, I was introduced to Authentic Movement and found it to be so meaningful that I pursued advanced education through Contemplative Dance, an institute in Western Massachusetts, developed by Daphne Lowell and Alton Wasson.
I find Authentic Movement to be a direct way to access the parts within us that wish to speak, but perhaps don't have the words.
It's a non-confrontational way to learn safety and boundaries in relationship.
It's a way to experience the transcendent quality of seeing and being seen without judgement.
I have grown immensely through the process of moving and witnessing. I have learned to hear the very quiet voice within me that guides me even when life gets noisy. I have increased my capacity for compassion and empathy, and have developed patience and tolerance for the unknown.
My hope as a facilitator is to help you cultivate these qualities within yourself, so that you may feel more at ease in your body and in your life.
This practice is supportive of spiritual inquiry. It is a vast creative resource. It provides safe space in which to feel, to release, to explore, and to play. I feel that anyone who wishes to connect deeply with themselves, to better understand themselves in the context of their lives, will find Authentic Movement to be a worthwhile activity.
This practice is for all people. No experience with dance, movement, or somatics is needed to begin.

Authentic Movement is a rich personal growth activity, and I am happy to include this practice in therapy sessions for folks in NY + MA. If you are outside of these states, we can practice together as an educational activity.
Sessions are structured intentionally, with time for you to check in, share your needs, move with witnessing, process your experience, and close.
Please reach out to schedule a session.
